The side pouches give you quick access options for smaller items without having to open the main compartment, whereas the front and main compartments require you to unbuckle the hand strap first. This does add another step to getting into your gear, but it's not too cumbersome, and the added security is nice. At first, the Proteus did seem rather small. But after loading it up and adding attachments, I realized that for the way they've set it up to carry, I wouldn't want it to be much bulkier anyway. Since I won't be using the waistpack straps that are stored in the back sleeve, I plan to remove them, which will free up some internal space in the main compartment.
By the way, to carry documents, I'm attaching the Maxpedition Pocket Tactile Large to the back molle. Just the right dimensions for letter-sized paper folded in half. This pouch is almost exactly the same height as the Proteus so it's a good add-on if you need more space.
The only real improvements I can think of for the Proteus would be to make the side pouches about an inch wider (3-inches is somewhat limiting). Also, the adjustable straps connected to the carry handle can loosen up a bit as you carry the bag around. Not really an issue the way I use it, but it could be a problem if you're trying to strap something to the outside of the bag. Perhaps some velcro or other 'locking' mechanism could eliminate slippage. But these are pretty minor things. Overall an awesome product. Great job Maxpedition!
I'm able to fit my charger and cables, medication, small hand tools, carry license, wallet, a small med bag I thre together, notepad and writing utensils, a lighter, and my backup pistols. One is my EAA revolver and the other is a CZ75 compact for regular carry or a Glock 42 when I'm in dress/gym clothes. This is includes two spare mags for each. Bag has some weight but I'll have everything I need. The material is high quality to where I could throw this thing around through the muck and hell of nature and itll still dust off fine and hold its integrity. The stitching hasn't come apart in the 6 months Ive had the bag and that was a problem with other bags I've used prior.
The zippers dont feel like crap quality and they hold up well to excess gear buildup if stacked too much. The snap clips are really rugged as well and dont feel like cheap plastic. Having to unclip the two in the front to get stuff is a little annoying but I can get over that since I like everything else on the bag. I dont wear this on my waist, mainly just carry in on my cart bag or just by hand to and from the car. I also hook on my bose speaker with a few d-ring to the rings it has attached and now I have it all in one and can detach quick If needed. And all of it can still be low profile to carry in the car with all of my other field tools, equipment, groceries and especially when I have guests in the car.
Maxpedition is top of the line and will last you a lifetime. This is my second bag from them and I've just gotten their range bag and it doesn't disappoint either. You'll pay for quality but itll be worth it every time.
The opening on the top for the main compartment could feel small, is roughly 6.5 inches only, the width of the main compartment is closer to 8.5 inches, that 2 inches are used by the 2 zippers used to close the top, so nothing beyond 5 inches on length can be put there or you will have a hard time retrieving it on the go.
I'm not sure why I don't noticed it from the pictures before purchasing the bag but the top part don't have any map flap to cover the access so that put the bag out of question to use on any rain situation, instead of the classic map flap that you will see on a butt pack we have a small handle that snaps on place with two side release plastic buckles to the compression straps on the bag on the front.
The secondary compartment is around 7 inches on width but it feels bigger due the fact that the zipper covers almost the totality of the front of the pocket from side to side, it has 3 dividers (one big and two smalls) that allows for some smart organization (alcohol or refreshing wipes, some medication on small zip lock bags, passport or small notepad) it has a section of PALS webbing for you to play with maybe a small pouch (3.5 inches of webbing!).
It has two super small pouches on the sides, and I want to be clear that I'm not exaggerating when I say SUPER SMALL! The side pouches are 2" wide by 5" tall, so you can not put a cellphone there unless is a 2005 flip phone! I tested with different objects that I have at hand and I could fit a small bottle of pills, so probably you can carry some medication or a container like that with batteries, matches, maybe some band aids and tweezers?
The reason why I'm not returning it is because it was purchased as a companion for my main camera bag when I'm walking and taking pictures.
I need a bag to put the light meter, the lens caps, filters and extra rolls of film, the big bag gets on the way if I lean forward or kneel in order to get a better angle, it swings around when running or walking fast unless I use my right hand to keep the bag close to my core!
The Proteus is on my butt, so my hands are free to hold and protect the camera, when I need the meter just reach back and grab it, after metering it goes back, need a new roll of film? the same process, just reach on the back and get a new and drop the exposed one, it is out of the way keep the old photographer vest on the closet!

Klare Kaufempfehlung
